Motrin & Children's Motrin are over the counter medications that are used to treat symptoms of the common cold, sore throat, headache, and toothache. Because Motrin & Children's Motrin are over the counter (OTC) medications they are believed to be safe and are used by millions each adults and children each year. As with any medication Motrin has side effects which vary from mild to severe or even deadly. The most common side effects include gastrointestinal side effects such as: nausea, heartburn, indigestion, and vomiting. The more serious Motrin and Children's Motrin side effects may include a severe allergic reaction triggering a serious skin disorder such as: Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is also now known as erythema multiforme major (EM), leyll's Syndrome, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

Although adults and children are both affected by serious Motrin side effects such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome it appears that it is more commonly related to adolescent use of Motrin. There have been many reports of children or even infants being severely effected by SJS or one of the other skin disorders after a single Motrin dose. Although SJS and the other skin disorders may be treated before they become severe there have been several deaths reported as a result of untreated Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. If you suspect that you or a loved one may have SJS or any of the other associated skin disorders you consult with your physician regarding your symptoms and continuation of Motrin use.
